About the Club

Hoylake Sailing Club was founded in 1887 and is the second oldest such club in the local area. We are very family-friendly with our Clubhouse situated on Hoylake promenade, and we offer a strong social side in addition to our sailing activities. We are always welcoming of new members and visitors. For more information about joining and the various aspects of our Club, please navigate between the menus at the top of this page.

History of the Club

Hoylake Sailing Club was founded in 1887. On 28 May 1889 the Dock Board granted members permission to erect a boathouse on the shore before the promenade was even contemplated. However when the promenade was built the Clubhouse was moved back to its present position.

Around the turn of the 20th century, the channel was silting up and it became necessary to design a flat bottomed boat and in 1901 and 1902 the first two of the ‘Opera’ class boats, ’San Toy’ and ‘Iolanthe’ were built in Alex Latta’s shed which was situated opposite the current site of Hoylake Lifeboat Station.

The Opera Class celebrated its centenary in 2002 and today there are 14 Operas still in the Club plus No. 6 La Poupee which is kept at the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
